When legends fail, whither us?
In 1960 there was a movie starring Burt Lancaster called “Elmer Gantry” about the perils of demagoguery and the seduction of fame and power.
It was meant to be a morality tale, and like all morality tales was exaggerated to what was believed at the time to be an impossible degree.
What does it say when now, four and a half decades later, it appears more as a documentary than a morality tale?
Legends and morality tales are meant to provide both positive examples and warnings. When the legends fail because of the heroes with feet of clay, and the morality tales more truth than fiction, whither our civilization?
Whither us?
